SWIMMING Results Roundup for Irish Swimming

The European Youth Olympic Festival concluded today in Tampere, Finland with more success for the entire squad including Leander swimmer, Sycerika McMahon, who finished in 4th place in the final of the 200m Butterfly in a time of 2:18.94. This was a new personal best for the swimmer who also recorded a personal best in the race for the 100m split time of 1:04.73.


Overall, McMahon finished with the largest haul of medals of any Irish athlete at this competition following her Silver and 2 Bronze medals won during the week. Jordan Sloan of Bangor swam well in the 100m Backstroke but did not progress from his heat whilst Nicholas Quinn of Castlebar finished 3rd in the B Final of the 400m Individual Medley in a new personal best time of 4:41.81.


Several other Irish swimmers have also been competing on the international stage this week at the British Age Group Championships in Sheffield, UK. Conor Turner of Aer Lingus Swimming Club finished in 3rd place in the 1500m Freestyle (under 14) in a new personal best time of 16:20.79. Turner also recorded personal bests in the 200m Butterfly & 400m Freestyle.


Dayna Clegg of Templeogue Swimming Club swam a new personal best of 1:00.79 in the 100m Freestyle (under 13). Good performances were also recorded by Curtis Coulter of Ards Swimming Club who has a personal best in the final of the 100m Freestyle (under 14) with a time of 54.08, while Katrin Kychyging, Jane Roberts, Jack Cobain and Sean O'Brien have all competed strongly in their events so far. The competition continues until Sunday.


The Irish Youth and Senior Championships continued today at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin. Steven McQuillan of Ards swimming club, who has just arrived home after competing at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia, lowered the Irish Senior Record he set in the 50m Butterfly at the games in the semi-finals today in a time of 24.49. McQuillan went on to win the event in a time of 24.77.
