14 Jul 2009

Daragh Sheridan reports on news of developments in building partnerships with the corporate world. Two articles promoting Institute's Athlete Career Development Programme to key employer groups were recently published in the journals of Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) and Engineers Ireland.

'Gaining A Competitive Edge'

The CIPD is Ireland's leading professional body for those involved in the management and development of people. Based in Dublin, the CIPD has over 6,500 members spread across seven regional branches. CIPD members include some Ireland's top HR managers who recruit top talent for their companies.

Since November 2008, the Irish Institute of Sport has been in discussion with the CIPD regarding a possible partnership link between the CIPD and the Institute's Athlete Career Development Programme.

Michael McDonnell, Director CIPD commented 'The Athlete Career Development Programme is an exciting ta lent recruitment opportunity for Irish companies to consider. Elite athletes demonstrate a range of high performance skills and competencies that can really add value to a work place. We are delighted to support this initiative.' Daragh Sheridan stated 'This article is a significant promotional vehicle designed to create awareness of our athlete's needs in the work place. We are delighted to receive the support of the CIPD and we look forward to announcing a series of employer collaborations in the coming months.'

A New Challenge: The Race to Seek Employment

With over 24,000 members, Engineers Ireland is one of the country's oldest and largest professional bodies. Their primary role is to be the representative voice of the engineering profession in Ireland.

In July's issue of the Engineers Journal, Institute Athlete Eugene Coakley provides an in depth account of his journey as a retired athlete competing in a new race to find employment. The article provides an in depth account of Eugene's journey as a world class rower entering the world of work after a decorated career representing Ireland for over a decade.

Eugene Coakley stated 'Before I entered the Institute's athlete career development programme I did not have a clear plan of action relating to steps that I needed in order to compete and get a job. I now have a top quality CV that captures my career profile plus I have a targeted job search plan. With the economic downturn the race to get the limited number of jobs has really become competitive. I believe that my skills, which I have developed both on and off the water, will give me a unique competitive edge that will serve a future employer well. I have learned a tremendous amount over the duration of my elite sports career and I believe that I will achieve my newfound goal, which is to convert my sporting success into life and career success.'

Since the publication of this article we are delighted to report that Eugene has successfully found employment and we would like to wish him the every best in his new career with Powerhouse Clothing.
