CUSAI Three More Records Broken In Pool - WUGSs Monday round-up
Swimming
Irish swimmers impressed in the pool again on Monday smashing three national records, contributing to the four they broke on Sunday.
In the 800m freestyle, Andrew Meegan set a new Irish national record of 8:18.06 minutes and Karl Burdis broke the 100m backstroke record for the third time in two days. He shaved 0.01 seconds off the time in the event's final where he finished 7th in 55.02 seconds.
Ryan Harrison broke the men's 200m freestyle record twice in one day clocking 1:49.67 minutes in the evening's semi-final after breaking the record in the morning's heat. He finished 10th overall, just missing out on the final by half a second.
Elsewhere in the pool, Ashleigh Hyland swam 1:13.92 minutes in her heat in the 100m breaststroke.
Tennis
Ireland had a tough day on the clay courts, with losses in the mixed doubles and men's and women's singles.
Dara McLoughlin and Niamh Coveney lost in a tie-break to France's Rousset and Garcia in the first round of the mixed doubles. With the scores level at one set each, (7-5, 3-6) the match was to be decided on a tie break which the Irish lost 10-3.
DCU's Simon Wrafter lost in straight sets to Hsin-Han Lee of Chinese Taipei 0-6,0-6 in the third round of the men's singles. Lee is the sixth seed in the tournament and it was always going to be tough for Wrafter. In the women's second round clash, Andrea Maughan went out of the competition losing to Germany's Ria Dornemann 4-6, 2-6.
McLoughlin is in action again tomorrow in the men's singles and faces a tough test against the second seed Artem Smirnov.
Football
Ireland's women are out of the main competition in the Games but faced Poland today in a second round battle for rankings places.
They suffered a narrow one goal defeat in a closely contested contest against a solid Poland side. The first half was evenly balanced with both first half goals coming in the space of two minutes. The polish team managed to break the Irish defence on 31 minutes when a slip pass was met by Paulina Katazyna who beat Tiarna Mc Kenna in the Irish goal. The Irish responded immediately from the tip off when a shot from Rachael Furness from outside the box was spilled by the Polish goal-keeper and Zoe Doherty reacted quickest to apply the finish.
In a game which was played in intense heat and humidity, fatigue began to set in the second half and a momentary lapse in the Irish defence allowed the Polish winger inside the Irish cover. The ball was squared to Anna Zelazko who put the Poles in front once more. Ireland did fashion late chances which may on another day have earned them a result. Rachael Furness, Sarah Mc Grath and Rachael Jenkins were all heavily involved but the best chance of an equaliser came right at the death on 93 minutes when Mary Waldron's rebounded effort flew over the bar after a shot from the edge of the six yard box.
Ireland's women now face South Africa in their next game.
In men's football, Kieran Harding's side lost 1-0 to Canada in their second round fixture.
