The first meeting of the Physical Literacy Forum was held on 25th June 2020 by webinar providing an opportunity to update forum representatives on the progress of the All Island Physical Literacy project to date and to present provisional data.

The National Sports Policy 2018 - 2027 acknowledges the importance of physical literacy as a key component in promoting participation in sport and physical activity throughout the population. It recognises the need to adopt a life course perspective around the development of physical literacy and the importance of involving multiple stakeholders from Government, State agencies, sports, education, health, civil society, etc. The policy committed to various actions to integrate the concept of physical literacy more closely into the work of those organisations involved in promoting sport and physical activity throughout the population.

On foot of this commitment, Sport Ireland, in conjunction with Sport Northern Ireland, commissioned a joint research team comprising Ulster University, Dublin City University, University of Limerick and University College Cork to produce an All-Island Statement on Physical Literacy.

The research project to date has included three major tasks:

  1. Rapid review of literature
  2. Environmental scan
  3. Delphi poll

The All-Island Physical Literacy Forum  (AIPL) has been established as a means to gain broader stakeholder involvement regarding the implementation, future use and the inherent benefit of the Physical Literacy statement following its adoption.

The purpose of the AIPL Forum is outlined as follows:

  • Consult openly with stakeholders from the range of sectors and promote cross-sectorial understanding of the concepts, benefits, applications and identify issues and their solutions.
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration and cross sectoral working
  • Consider common outcomes at organisational and sector level
  • Contribute to preparation for the implementation phase of the project.

The multi sectoral forum provides expertise across sport, physical activity, play, health, education, youth and community sectors
