BOXING Sheahan Claims Gold in Croatia
Roy Sheahan was back on top of the podium in Pula, Croatia this afternoon after claiming gold from his light welterweight final with home favourite Borna Katalin.
Sheahan, a three times Irish senior champion from the St Michael's Athy club, beat the Croat 5-2 in a 69Kg three rounder which scooped the bout of the tournamnet award.
The 2007 European Union champion won three fights in Croatia, also beating Hungarian Eric Nemes and Velbor Backovic from Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Meanwhile, Belfast bantamweight Ryan Lindberg had to settle for bronze yesterday after he was beaten 8-2 by Andrew Selby of Wales in the 54Kg semi final.
David Oliver Joyce and Ross Hickey bowed out at the quarter finals stage on Thursday. Joyce was beaten 14-9 by Romanian featherweight Julian Stan despite a storming final round.
And Hickey was edged out by one point, losing 5-4 to Russian lightweight Vladimir Magzoumov.
The Irish team are due to arrive home via Dublin Airport Sunday night at 8pm.
