Bere Island - Ardnakinna - West Island Loop

We thoroughly enjoyed this hike...it was stunningly beautiful from start to finish. While difficult, boggy and steep in places we managed this with our 6 month old in a sling...I would not recommend with a child unless there is great whether and no wind and a reasonable level of fitness. We took the anticlockwise loop. The views are amazing and we didn't see one piece of litter the whole way around. It took us about 3.5 hrs with some rests. Th lighthouse is stunning and we'll worth the climb.

Having caught the ferry to start this walk, though the Island is inhabited by feral dogs, after crossing the NO DOGS sign we were told to turn back because personal dogs are not allowed. It should be made clear that dogs are not welcome on the Bere Peninsula. Some signs state that they will be shot.

After leaving the ferry follow road and take left at T Junction. Heading out towards Ardnakinna the views to the north looking back over Castletowmbere are fantastic. On reaching Ardnakinna the views change completely and you overlook the entrance to Berehaven sound with the fishing boats passing below and the broad Atlantic stretching in the distance on your left. This is the most difficult part of the walk with a very steep climb for about 2K. After about 2.5 K you come across a raised green road way. Take a left and follow this trail which leads back to the T junction. Follow the waymarks to the battery which is at the max height of your walk and take in the views of Hungry Hill and surrounding hills. From here it is easy to see your return route. This walk can be done in under 4 hours for the average walker but make sure you judge the ferry times to coincide with your walk .Good family walk for kids over 12. Best in summer, wet in winter.
