BASKETBALL: Basketball Ireland Announcement

08 Dec 2008

As part of the development of a new five year strategy for Basketball in Ireland, the International Affairs Committee is pleased to present the following summary of a draft proposal for the development of basketball in the area of national teams preparation and performance.

Planning for the development of our national team underage programmes, we believe this draft proposal will provide positive changes to the pathway and will provide an improvement in the structure from grassroots to senior teams. It is envisaged that discussion on this development will be completed by mid January 2009, allowing the plan to be presented to the Board of Basketball Ireland shortly afterwards.

This High Performance Plan "From Participation To Performance" is critical to the success of all international programmes. The strategy will set specific targets in order to raise standards of all those involved with the preparation and competition for our international teams.

To instigate this plan a number of key aspects are being considered:

  • The introduction of a high performance coaching development plan
  • The appointment on a 6 month contract of a High Performance Coach
  • The introduction of a Personal Improvement Plan
  • Under 20s to be developed within Senior Programmes
  • Develop a pathway from underage to Senior / Super League / Irish University Teams/ NCAA.
  • Introduction of Under 13 and Under 14 Academies at provincial level for boys and girls.
  • A commitment to enter the European Championships for Under 16 Boys and Girls
  • Develop an American Emerald Hoops programme for the Under 18 panel
  • Introduce a European Achievable Minimum Standard across the various age groups as a target to achieve.

The I.A.C. hope this development shows our commitment to the development and standards of Basketball Ireland International programme. We welcome any feedback from the members of Basketball Ireland involved in clubs, schools, colleges the wider basketball community and on our various committees and sub committees.
