EQUESTRIAN Gold Medal for Ireland at World University Equestrian Championships

14 Oct 2008

Ireland's Ben Crawford was top of the class in the Show-jumping event at the World University Equestrian Championships held this weekend in Algers, Algeria.

Crawford, 21, becomes the third Irish person to secure an individual gold medal in Show-jumping at the World University Equestrian Championships, following in the footsteps of Lee Murphy (2004, Japan) and Jenny Pratt (1984, Germany).

The 21 year old Civil Engineering student from Larne, Co. Antrim was part of a four person team who travelled to the event to compete for Ireland and competed in both Dressage and Show-jumping disciplines at the event.

This is the fourth medal secured by Irish University students this year after the success of DCU's Fionnuala Britton and her team mates at the World University Cross Country Championships in France and the exploits of UCC's Orla Hayes at the Rowing Championships in Belgrade last month.
