Ireland through to World Cup final after thrilling win - Chairman of Sport Ireland congratulates team
Ireland are through to the Hockey World Cup final after a thrilling sudden-death penalty shootout win over Spain in London.
Chairman of Sport Ireland, Kieran Mulvey, earlier congratulated coach Graham Shaw, captain Katie Mullan and the entire Irish set-up and wished them well for tomorrow’s showpiece.
Mr Mulvey said: “The Irish team has captured the imagination of the entire country, playing with immense pride and passion to overcome Spain in such thrilling fashion today. I am delighted for the team, the support staff, their families and Irish hockey community on what is a remarkable achievement. To Graham and his team, regardless of the result tomorrow, we are incredibly proud of what you have achieved; the very best of luck in the final.”
Chief Executive of Sport Ireland, John Treacy, added: “Tomorrow the team will deservedly take its place in the World Cup final; a brilliant achievement and testament to the hard work and dedication the entire squad and support staff have put in, not just in the build-up to the tournament, but over many years.
