Massive Interest in Nutrition in Sport Conference

Registration has closed for the Nutrition and Peak Performance conference taking place this Saturday in Croke Park with all 450 available places taken up. The conference, which is hosted by the Sports Nutrition Interest Group, and supported by the Irish Sports Council has generated massive interest among the sporting and wider health community. A broad variety of delegates from international athletes, coaches, health and medical professionals to commercial interests are set to hear from international expert speakers.

Speakers will include Dr. Hans Geyer of the German Sports University in Cologne,Greg Cox of the Australian Institute of Sport, Professor Ron Maughan of Loughborough University, and Ruth Wood Martin; Performance Nutritionist for the IRFU. Among the topics they will address is hydration in sport, making weight in weight category sports, nutrition for the young and adolescent athlete, and nutrition in preparation for competition.

The issue of the use of nutritional supplements will be explored with Greg Cox debating whether nutritional supplements are of benefit to sports people. Dr. Hans Geyer will present the results of his landmark international research examining the contamination of supplement products with prohibited substances.

Irish Sports Council Chief Executive John Treacy is looking forward to the day long event; “This conference is about helping the entire sports community access important nutritional information; it’s not only for the sports scientists and dieticians but for athletes, teams, coaches and mentors all over the country. Accredited Sports Dietitians Jill Sommerville and Sharon Madigan, in addition to expert speakers Dr. Hans Geyer, and Greg Cox are available to the media for interviews on Friday 26th Jan.
