McKillop Marches to 1500m Gold Medal

11 Sep 2016

Michael McKillop picked up his fourth Paralympic gold medal as he successfully defended his T37 1,500 metre title with a time of 4:12.11 in Rio today.

Running in sweltering 29 degree conditions in the Olympic Stadium, McKillop fought off tough competition from Canada’s Liam Stanley to pull away in the final 200m to claim Ireland’s second gold of the Rio Games.

Congratulating Michael on today’s win, Chairman of Sport Ireland, Kieran Mulvey, said: “Michael is consistency personified. Having last year added 800m and 1,500m World Championship gold medals to the two golds he won at the London Paralympic Games, Michael has yet again come out on top.

“Michael is real inspiration, giving it his all today in tough conditions, and on behalf of Sport Ireland I would like to extend congratulations to him and all the team in Paralympics Ireland.”
