HOCKEY Irish teams named for Setanta Sports Trophy

04 Jun 2008

Coach Gene Muller today announced his selected eighteen athletes to compete in the Setanta Sports Trophy which takes place 11th - 15th June in UCD, Dublin. The tournament sees Ireland’s men and women pitted against some of the world’s top hockey nations including Pakistan, Germany, Great Britain, South Africa and Canada.

Muller, who recently returned from Canada with his team where they took bronze at the Olympic Qualifiers, has reintroduced two athletes back into the squad, UCD’s Roisin Flinn who at twenty two has already earned forty caps and twenty three year old Christine Quinlan who looks set to earn her first senior cap.

Commenting on the impending tournament Muller is very much aware that his opponents will all be at their peak as they continued to prepare for the Olympics “The Setanta Sports Trophy is a fantastic opportunity for our team, as it gives us an opportunity to play against three Olympic bound teams at home.  Germany, Great Britain, and South Africa are teams that are approaching their peak, and will therefore be formidable opponents.   We are looking to perform well against these teams before the end of our international season.”
