The Irish Senior Ladies Team got off to a good start at the Senior European Team Championships today at Sierra Golf Club, Poland.  Ireland are lying in second place after day one in Poland and are just trailing France by one shot.

Experienced senior international, Sheena McElroy (Grange) carded a very steady 74, joint best round of the day. McElroy opened with two bogeys but that didn’t stop her as she answered back with two birdies on the 5th and 6th. She came home in two over to sign for a 74. Senior international rookie, Mary Sheehy (Tralee) was the next best of the Irish, and a steady back nine helped her on her way to a 76. Portumna’s Suzanne Corcoran was only one shot further back on 77 while it was a 79 for Gertie McMullen (The Island), 80 for Laura Webb (East Berkshire) and Carol Wickham (Laytown & Bettystown) carded a non-counting 81.

All teams will play one more qualifying round tomorrow, 31 August, and Ireland will have high hopes of a top flight qualification before the match play stages.  Teams one to eight qualify for the top flight and nine through to 16 for flight two.
