ILGU - AIG Ladies Cups and Shields District Champions

06 Sep 2016

The AIG Ladies Cups and Shields District Finals took place last weekend and 30 teams will now prepare for the National Finals in one month. The National Finals will take place at Dundalk Golf Club from 21-24 September.  The AIG Ladies Cups and Shields comprise of six categories. There is a Junior and Senior Foursomes category and the remaining four are singles matchplay, namely Junior Cup, Intermediate Cup, Minor Cup and Challenge Cup with all handicap ranges and ability of golfer taking part.

Connacht District – Athenry Golf Club

All matches were played with great determination, camaraderie and spirit in what were beautiful conditions for golf. While no match reached the 19th, the Rules Officials claimed not to recall so many matches being decided on the 18th.

There was great attention paid to the Senior Foursomes as the deciding match came down to the final hole, where Portumna holed the decider putt to overcome the opposing Co. Sligo pair.  Portumna also emerged victorious in the Intermediate Cup, as they overcame Co. Longford, which was a first for them at that level.

In the Junior Cup, Roscommon beat first time district finalists Ballina, while the Minor Cup saw Ballinrobe triumph over Bearna.  In the Challenge Cup, Co. Sligo’s Patricia Harte recorded 2 birdies, on the 3rd and 17th respectively as she defeated Ann Lalor (Galway) 1up, which helped them secure a 3½ - 1½ victory.

Connacht District Chairman Regina Kerr and executive committee member Margaret Tighe were on the victorious Castlebar Junior Foursomes team, as they saw off Gort, 2½ - ½.

East Leinster District – Milltown Golf Club

Edmondstown and Headfort Golf Clubs shared the spoils with one a piece as Edmondstown took the Intermediate Cup title and Headfort will represent East Leinster in the Challenge Cup at Dundalk Golf Club in the National Finals. Milltown took advantage of home ground when they defeated Donabate in the Senior Foursomes. The Junior Foursomes was a very tight affair between Stackstown and 2015 District Champions Powerscourt. The first two matches needed extra tie holes and with a win for Stackstown in the final match, their first pairing emerged on top on the 22nd green. Greystones were crowned District Minor Cup Champions after seeing off Newlands. It was 31 years since Castle won a Junior Cup title, but with the help of two mother and daughter duo's Ann & Aly Doyle and Martha and Amy Jones 2016 was their year.

Mid Leinster District – Wexford Golf Club

The Mid Leinster Senior Foursomes was won by Kilkenny, as they beat Royal Curragh. Kilkenny are in winning mode following their All-Ireland success in the Senior Cup at Greystones last week. Three of the players, Orla Dunphy, Jan Browne and Katie Aherne who played on the Senior Cup Team were also members of the Senior Foursomes Team.  The Junior Foursomes matches were again very close but Tramore edged the win as they overcame Mullingar.

Local Team Wexford had two teams in the finals and they won both - Challenge Cup and Junior Cup. Wexford had three convincing match wins over Royal Curragh in the Junior Cup and the other two matches were called in. The Challenge Cup Team from Wexford had a much closer encounter with Mount Wolseley.  The score line of 3½ -1½ did not reflect the battle.

The Intermediate Cup between Tullamore and Wicklow was a very close encounter, but Wicklow edged the win.  The Minor Cup brought huge excitement when Athy won.  They had never won a district pennant, certainly in the lifetime of members present.

Munster District – Dungarvan Golf Club

Dungarvan Golf Club hosted the Munster District Finals and the battle of the Cork Clubs was up first. East Cork dominated their Senior Foursomes match against Cork and came away with the District title.  It was a very close affair between Cahir Park and Killarney in the Junior Foursomes but the Tipperary Team edged the win as the top match triumphed on the 19th.

Castletroy emerged as winners in the Junior Cup, while Ballykisteen dominated the Intermediate Cup against opponents Fermoy. Ballykisteen young guns, 13 year old Kaelin O’Keeffe and 10 year old Caitlin Shippam helped the Tipperary team to a 4-1 win.

Co. Tipperary defended their District Minor Cup title as they sailed to a 3½ - 1½ win over Raffeen Creek. Meanwhile, Ballybunion had a close encounter with Ballykisteen in the Challenge Cup but emerged eventual winners.

Shandon Park, Malone, Co. Armagh, Belvoir Park and Donaghadee produced impressive golf to get two teams to the finals. Belvoir Park and Co. Armagh made the best of having two teams there as Belvoir Park were crowned Junior Foursomes and Junior Cup Champions as they saw off Donaghadee and Galgorm Castle. Co. Armagh beat Malone in the Minor Cup and Donaghadee in the Challenge Cup as they also took home two AIG District Pennants. Malone Golf Club managed to capture one District title as they brought home the Intermediate Cup and Royal Portrush dominated the Senior Foursomes as they beat Shandon Park 2½ - ½.
