16 Aug 2016

Sport Ireland Chairman Kieran Mulvey today extended his congratulations to Ireland’s Annalise Murphy on securing Ireland’s second silver medal of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Murphy finished today’s medal race in 5th place, doing enough to secure Ireland’s first Olympic medal in sailing in 36 years. Commenting after the race, Mr. Mulvey said; “What a fantastic achievement by Annalise. Having claimed gold in the 2013 European Championships, Annalise has been focused on Olympic success; her determination was clear to see throughout the competition and today’s medal win is truly deserved.

“On behalf of Sport Ireland I want to congratulate Annalise on her achievement which is the product of countless hours of training and preparation. It is important to also recognise the team behind the athlete, and I also extend my congratulations to all of Annalise’s support staff and her family. I would also like to congratulate all at the Irish Sailing Association on this wonderful achievement.”
