Chairman of Sport Ireland, Kieran Mulvey, today wished the 77 members of Team Ireland good luck as they complete their final preparation ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Mr Mulvey said: “It is fantastic to see so many athletes across an impressive array of sports qualified for the Rio Games.
“Since the London 2012 Games, our high performance system has moved on considerably and government investment in high performance sport and our top international athletes through Sport Ireland has totalled over €34 million to ensure Ireland keeps performing on the world stage. As well this, Sport Ireland has put considerable investment into the Institute of Irish Sport and the National Sports Campus, which have played pivotal roles in the preparation of our Olympians.
“Sport Ireland aims to ensure Ireland’s performance in elite international sport improves and also to create consistent success at elite level. We have seen great progression on the international stage since the London 2012 Games with sustained investment in high performance sport, and we hope that this will continue beyond the Rio Games.
“To our athletes - you bring great pride and honour to our country by your participation. To all involved in Team Ireland and everyone in the Olympic Council of Ireland, the very best of luck in Rio!”
The eyes of the world’s media are on Rio as the Irish athletes settle into the Olympic Village and CEO of Sport Ireland, John Treacy, highlighted the impact these ambassadors can have on the Irish public: “One of Sport Ireland’s key strategic aims is increasing participation from every age group and from all backgrounds throughout Ireland.
“During the Rio Games fans old and young will tune in to watch Irish athletes compete at the highest level across thirteen sports. I have no doubt that the performances of these fine ambassadors will help our National Governing Bodies and encourage many to get up, get active and get involved in sport - inspiring our Olympians of the future.
“I want to congratulate Ireland’s flag bearer Paddy Barnes on what will be very special moment for him on Friday night as he leads the team into the arena.
“I’d also like to take this opportunity to wish our athletes, coaches and support staff and all in the Olympic Council of Ireland the very best in the weeks ahead. Ireland is right behind you!”
