Football - Irish Development squads named for Galway Cup

29 Jul 2016

THE Football Association of Ireland will have two squads participating in the Macron Galway Cup next week as Ireland U16 Head Coach Paul Osam has named a Development Squad for the tournament with Stephen Rice taking charge of the FAI Future Developers Squad.

The Future Developers programme has run for seven years. Players are selected from a group of players identified by FAI Emerging Talent Programme coaches who have a low Body Mass Index (BMI) but are technically excellent.

Rice and his coaching team have worked with the group of players for the past five weeks. Players who have come through the process in the past included Alan Browne and Brian Lenihan, who are now key members of the Irish U21s squad.

"We've had the player together for five training days and played two games against strong opposition. It's an opportunity for the players to show what they've learned over the past five weeks and more importantly to show Paul Osam that they can push for international opposition in the next 12 months," said Rice.

"Two of the players, Jack Moylan and Michael Garrihy, have already played for Paul against the Hibernia Trophy development squad. That already reflects the programme and how it's working."

Osam will take charge of Ireland U16 Development Squad for the tournament, which is hosted by Salthill Devon FC at their excellent facilities in Drom.

After competing in the Mayo International Cup earlier this month, Osam is looking forward to working with the squad in Galway next week.

"It's another opportunity for the players to make an impression and for myself and staff to see the players against decent opposition," said Osam.

"It'll give some players an opportunity to show what they can do and can get used to what we're looking for from them when representing their country."
