"Irish Squad depart for Finland"
The Irish Senior team departed for Finland today (April 12th) ahead of tomorrows GeeBee Multi Nations draw and preliminary round bouts in Helsinki.
Ireland will be hoping to surpass last seasons GeeBee Multi Nations medal haul of one gold, one silver and two bronze in the Finnish capitol.
In April 2006 middleweight Darren O'Neill from the Paulstown club in Kilkenny, won gold and boxer of the tournament award in Helsinki while the St Michael's Athy trio of David Oliver Joyce, John Joe Joyce and Roy Sheahan landed one silver and two bronze medals between them.
Meanwhile, Russia has named their squad for the upcoming senior internationals with Ireland at the National Stadium in Dublin on April 27th and the Athlone Institute of Technology on April 29th.
Kirill Glumov (57Kg), Ivan Elizarov (60Kg), Umit Aleshkin (60Kg) Gennady Rybalko (64Kg) Evgeniy Kochurov 69Kg,Vasily Pugachev (75Kg) Boris Proklin (81Kg) Sairan Smailov (91Kg) and Andrey Kudlay (91+Kg) will represent their country versus Ireland.
The Irish Amateur Boxing Association will announce their squad for the double header of internationals with Russia early next week.
