Irish Paratriathletes Impress In Detroit
Catherine Walsh with pilot Fran Meehan finished 4th in their first International triathlon in a time of 1:15:52. The pair came out of the 750 metre swim in 5th place but set the fastest bike split of the day before running 25:59 to finish.
Walsh is a former paracycling World Champion so has that discipline nailed and over time the swim and run will no doubt progress so they become a real threat in the PT5 category. The 4th place finish in the Detroit World Paratriathlon showed their class as they beat the world number 6 and world number 13 in the process.
In the men's PT4 category, Aidan McGlynn put in another strong performance to finish 5th in the 30 degree heat of Detroit. The race was won by world number 3, Chris Hammer of the USA in a time of 56:58 with McGlynn crossing the line in 1:01:27. McGlynn lies 28th in the world, however this result should see him continue his climb up the rankings.
Gareth Turbett found the going tough in the swim portion of the race but finished strong on the bike and run to clock 1:18:26, good enough for 6th place in the PT3 category.
Edmonton World Paratriathlon on September 5th is the next opportunity to gather Rio Paralympic Games Qualification Points for the Irish Paratriathlon team.
