Mulcaire Breaks Treacy's 40 Year Old 5000m Irish Junior Record

Kevin Mulcaire (Ennis Track) produced a new Irish 5000m Record when finishing second in 14.02.30 at the Trafford BMC Grand Prix meet last night. The record was held by Olympic Silver Medallist John Treacy and has stood for 40 years (14.04.6). Speaking to former President of Athletics Ireland, Liam Hennessy, Treacy said; "Excellent running by Kevin. I am delighted to see that record go after so many years - it was time it was broken!" The race was won with Andrew Heyes (GB) in 14.01.30 with Irish Senior International athlete Paul Pollock (Annadale Striders) third in 14.11.09

Foster Close to her Irish 100m Record
At the NTC Pure Athletics Sprint meet in Clermont, Florida Amy Foster (City of Lisburn) opened her season with 11.41 (+0.7) over 100m, just one hundredth off her Irish Record held jointly with Ailis McSweeney. While in the 200m her time of 23.55 was one of her quickest over the distance with wind reading just over the legal limit (+2.1).

Ciara Everard (UCD AC) finished fourth in the 800m in 2:03.24 at the BMC Grand Prix in Stretford, her second fastest outdoor time with Claire Tarplee was seventh in 2:11.74

GloHealth AAI Games
At the GloHealth AAI Games Youth athlete Michaela Walsh (Swinford AC) was a class apart in the women's hammer event as she launched out to an impressive 58.87m. The mark for Walsh was comfortable over the required distance of 56m for the IAAF World Youth Championships which takes place in Columbia from the 15th-19th of July.

Times in the sprint events were affected by the strong headwind with Marcus Lawler (St Laurence O'Toole AC) and Steffi Creaner (Celtic DCH) winning their 200m races in 21.79 (-1.9) and 24.53 (-4.2). The later 100m races saw Stephen Gaffney (Rathfarnham WSAF) win the men's race in 10.92 (-2.1) and Sarah Murray (Fingallians AC) taking the women's race in 12.14 (-1.9).

There was a clear cut win for Harry Purcell (Trim AC) in the 800m as he stormed clear over the last 100m to win in a time of 1.52.17. Maryann O'Sullivan (St Abbans AC) ran a personal best of 4.30.66 to win the women's 1500m as Kevin Kelly (St Cocas AC) won a tight men's 1,500m in 3.54.39
