Evans Wins Midnight Marathon At The 2015 All England Championships
In the Women's Singles Chloe Magee faced the current World Champion Carolina Marin of Spain. Marin started the match with her usual fiery determination and raced through the opening game, showing why she is seeded six for this prestigious event. In the second game Magee changed her tactics and was able to counter attack Marin's attacking play. This change of tactics helped Magee take the second game, much to the delight of the Irish fans in the crowd. In the third game Magee started with a number of easy unforced errors. Marin took full advantage of her 4 point lead and controlled the game all the way to the end.
In the Mixed Doubles Sam and Chloe Magee were hoping to repeat the performance which saw them beat the World number 10 pairing of Michael Fuchs and Birgit Michels at last week's German Open. This week the Irish pair faced an even tougher task in World number 4 ranked players Tontowi
Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia. The Indonesian pair showed why they are such a highly rated pair as they dominated the match winning in two games. The Magee's will go away with a number of points to work on before the upcoming Swiss Open.
Scott Evans was the last of the Irish in action as he took to the court to face Hu Yun of Hong Kong. The first game was a thrilling affair with Evans leading all the way to 18 before being edged out in the closing points. The second game continued as the first with Evans again leading at the mid game interval. Evans maintained his lead staying one point ahead of his opponent up until 18 all, with both players winning through their attacking play. This time it was Evans who was more aggressive in the closing points as he attacked from the rear court and charged to the net to finish the rallies and take the second game.
In the deciding game Evans continued his aggressive tactic and controlled the game taking the shuttle as early as possible from the forecourt and pressuring his opponent to force the lift. This tactic helped Evans take an 11-9 lead at the interval of the final game. From the interval Evans continued to attack his opponent and his hard working tactic of hitting hard from the rear court and being early on the net paid off as he kept a one point lead over his opponent all the way up to 18-17. This time Evans raised the intensity in the final points and stormed through the remaining points to book a place in the last 16 against number 8 seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark.
