100 Days To Go To The 1st European Games
The Irish Sports Council today welcomed the '100 Days to Go' countdown to the opening of the 1st European Games.
Speaking at an Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) event to mark the occasion, Chairman Kieran Mulvey said:"On behalf of the Irish Sports Council I would like to wish the Olympic Council and Team Ireland every success as they prepare for the inaugural European Games. With 100 days to go we all look forward to an exciting and innovative new competition and I would like to congratulate Pat (Hickey) who's vision and drive has led to the creation of the European Games".
The Games which take place in Baku, Azerbaijan will provide Irish athletes with top class competition and experience at a major multi-sport international event.Irish Gold Medallist and World and European Champion, Katie Taylor has been appointed as International Athlete Ambassador for the Games which will attract more than 6,000 athletes from 50 countries in 20 sports over 17 days of competition.
Speaking at the event, Chief Executive John Treacy said: "The Irish Sports Council enjoy an outstanding relationship with the Olympic Council. This is the most successful period of 'sustained success' in the history of high performance sport in Ireland and I would like to acknowledge the cooperation and partnership between the Olympic Council and the Irish Sports Council in ensuring our athletes and support teams have the optimum conditions and structures in place to enable them to perform on the international stage".
The 1st European Games will take place from 12th - 28th June, 2015 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
