Campus and Stadium Ireland Development Ltd Welcome Establishment of Irish  Institute of Sport

Taoiseach announced creation of Irish Institute of Sport to be located at the National Sports Campus at Abbotstown

Campus and Stadium Ireland Development (CSID) welcomes the establishment of the new Irish Institute of Sport.

Donagh Morgan, Chief Executive of Campus and Stadium Ireland Development Ltd said at the announcement that;  “The Institute will be a key element in the development of the facilities that will be provided for top class athletes at the National Sports Campus. CSID is looking forward to working closely with the Irish Sports Council in making the Institute a reality at the earliest date so that Irish elite athletes may begin to reap the benefits as soon as possible.”

The Government approved proposals for the development of a National Sports Campus at Abbotstown in November 2005 as set out in the Development Control Plan prepared by CSID. In addition to the Irish Institute of Sport the proposal as for the first phase include

(i) a National Field Sports Training Centre, catering for rugby, soccer, Gaelic games and hockey,
(ii) a National Indoor Training Centre, which will provide world class training facilities for the National Governing Bodies of Sport,
(iii) accommodation for sports men and women;
(iv) sports science and medical facilities, and
(v) all-weather synthetic pitches for community use.

The first phase will be completed over a four to five year time frame.

The National Sports Campus Development Authority Act, has recently been passed by the Dail and Seanad. The new Authority will have responsibility for the development of the National Sports Campus on the Abbotstown site.
