In boxing John Joe Joyce claimed his place on the Irish squad for this months European Union Championships following a 26-16 victory over Aodh Carlyle at the National Stadium in Dublin this afternoon (June 9th).The Irish Amateur Boxing Association last week named an eleven man squad for the tournament which begins at the National Stadium in Dublin on Monday June 18th.
 
However, the light welterweight position was up for grabs between Joyce, from the St Michael's Athy club, and Carlyle of the Golden Cobra club in Dublin, and Joyce has been included on the Irish panel following today's win..The European Union Championships, which will feature at least twenty one nations,will run from June 18th to June 23rd inclusively at the National Stadium in Dublin.

 John Joe Joyce will represent Ireland at light welterweight at the 5th European Union Championships following a hard fought victory over Aodh Carlyle at the National Stadium in Dublin this afternoon (June 9th).
 
The Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) last week named an eleven man squad for the European Union Championships.However,the 64Kg position was up for grabs between Joyce and Carlyle who met in a trial bout today.
 
Joyce, from the St Michael's Athy club, won the four rounder on a 26-16 scoreline and has now been included on the Irish panel for the Championships which glove off
at the National Stadium on Monday week (June 18th).
 
Joyce started today's bout well and took the first two rounds, but Carlyle,of the Golden Cobra club in Dublin, came more into the contest in the final two rounds of a top class head-to-head at the National Stadium.
 
This afternoons result means that the eleven man squad for the European Union Championships is now completed. The Irish panel will go into full time training at the National Stadium from next Tuesday right up to the beginning of the tournament on June 18th.
 
Twenty one nations including Ireland have already been confirmed to take part in the 5th European Union Championships. The IABA will hold a Press Conference at the Trinity Capital Hotel in Pearse Street Dublin next Wednesday (June 13th) to announce further details of the tournament.The Press Conference will begin at 1pm.
