The 56th Cork City Sports took place in the Mardyke on Saturday 30th June. Most of the crowd came to see Derval O’Rourke and David Gillick. Unfortunately, it was a  disappointing day for both. Derval after a poor start finally finished 3rd behind the winner Sarah Claxton from Britain. David’s fate was even worse as he was disqualified for a false start in the 400m.

However, apart from Derval and David, there were some excellent Irish performances. Paul Hession for the second time this season ran faster than Paul Brizzel’s Irish record in winning the 200m. Unfortunately the following wind of 4.7 seconds per second was more than twice the legal limit. In the 400m, Joanne Cuddihy had an excellent victory in 52.26secs. Mary Cullen won the 300om in 9.12.49 and David Campbell the 1500m in  3.42.2 beating the Kenyan Kenyan Laban Rotich into 2nd place.
Other notable Irish performances were Roisin McGettigan’s and Maria McCambridge’s 3rd place respectively in the women’s’ 1500m and 3000m.
