German Open

Scott Evans went out of the Yonex German Open in Mulheim with his head held high after putting up a tremendous battle in his second round match against Jen Hao Hsu of Chinese Taipei.

In a marathon encounter than lasted 80 minutes, the Irish No 1 took the first game comfortably at 21-12, using his serve to powerful effect.

Hsu, who is currently ranked at No 30 in the world but has been as high at 24, pulled himself back into the match when he won the second game 21-15. That set up a titanic battle in the decider.

Both players had their moments, but from early on, Hsu always had a point or two in hand, and although Evans again picked up valuable points on his serve, teh Taiwanese player pulled ahead to win the game at 21-18 and with it a place in the third round.

In the women's singles, Chloe Magee lost her opening round match to Thailand's Nichaon Jindapon in straight sets.

Although she pulled off some good points, the Irish No 1 had no answer to the No 5 seed's all-round skills and speed.

Earlier, Magee and brother Sam Magee lost a heroic battle against No 5 seeds Chun Hei Lee and Hoi Wah Chau of Hong Kong in the opening round of the mixed doubles.

Although Lee and Chau are world ranked No 12, the Magees edged the opening set 23-21. The Hong Kong pair then stepped up a gear and won the next two sets 21-13, 21-9 to take victory in a match that lasted 44 minutes.
