Cricket Ireland Seek National Selectors

14 Feb 2014

Cricket Ireland are looking for volunteer National Selectors to help identify the next generation of Irish internationals capable of performing on the world stage.

Cricket Ireland has been an incredible success story both on and off the field, with record participation levels fuelled by qualification for World Cup events, and headline grabbing wins against Full Member countries.

"With qualification having already been secured for both the ICC World Twenty20 in March and the 2015 World Cup in Australia, there is a major push for Ireland to seek out future internationals as part of our succession planning," said Performance Director Richard Holdsworth.

"We are looking for quality volunteer candidates who can identify those players who are not only ready to compete on the world stage now but in several years to come. If Ireland is to realise its vision of becoming an ICC full member and Test-Playing nation, there needs to be a constant supply of world class players."

Cricket Ireland are inviting applications for National Selectors from the North-West and Leinster regions. These will be for a one-year term in the first instance. Former internationals Kyle McCallan and Alan Lewis currently hold the positions of National Selector - North and Chairman of National Men's Selectors respectively and will hold these until the end of 2015. It's the intention of Cricket Ireland to have all these posts advertised on a continual rolling annual basis.

Peter Gillespie stepped down as North-West selector last year and is not seeking re-election. Brian MacNeice is the current Leinster incumbent and is expected to once again put his name forward.

There are also volunteer opportunities available with the Ireland Women's squad. A Chair of National Women's Selectors is required and also a National Team Manager.

Ireland Women have also qualified for the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh, and have secured promotion in recent seasons which sees them playing in the ECB County Championship Second Division.

The team recently defeated Full Member Pakistan in an international tri-series in Qatar and are coached by Trent Johnston.

"It's an exciting time also for the Women's game," said Holdsworth. "The future of the game in Ireland looks very bright with a number of talented youngsters making a great impression. I genuinely believe the positions offer a great opportunity to be right at the epicentre of something historic."
