Over 13,000 people participated in the annual Nationwide Walking Events run by the Irish Sports Council and Local Sports Partnership in conjunction with Operation Transformation.
The nationwide walks took place in 42 locations all around Ireland, the highest number to date. Over 700 people alone turned out for the for the Mayo walk which was attended by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny.
Key findings from the Irish Sport Monitor Report 2013 revealed that recreational walking remains the most popular activity. John Treacy CEO of the Irish sports Council said "The Nationwide Walks were a great success and enjoyed by all those who participated. I would encourage people that are not walking on a regular basis to do so and to invest in their own health and well-being".
