Porterfield named captain of ICC Intercontinental Cup Team of the Tournament 2011-13

William Porterfield has been named captain of the ICC Intercontinental Cup 2011-13 Team of the Tournament, which was announced today. He is one of three Irish representatives in the team.
Porterfield, who was also named captain of the 2009-10 team of the tournament, inspired his side to its fourth title since the inception of this event in 2004. Porterfield scored 266 runs in four matches at an average of just over 44 as Ireland won six of its eight matches, including the final against Afghanistan by 122 runs at ICC Academy Oval 1 on Friday.
The ICC Intercontinental Cup 2011-2013, which started in June 11, was participated in by ICC’s eight leading Associate and Affiliate Members, and the team of the tournament includes players from six countries with only Canada and Kenya not represented.
Apart from Porterfield, the other Ireland players in the team of the tournament include Andrew White and George Dockrell, with the former scoring 469 runs at an average of just under 47 and the left-arm spinner finishing as the joint-leading wicket-taker with Namibia’s fast bowler Christoffel Viljoen with 39 wickets.
Viljoen’s team-mate Raymond van Schoor has also been selected as wicketkeeper-batsman. Van Schoor averaged 31 with the bat and accounted for 17 batsmen behind the wickets (16 catches and one stump).
Middle-order batsman Rahmat Shah, and fast bowlers Izatullah Dawlatzai and Dalwat Zadran, represent Afghanistan. Rahmat aggregated 317 runs in five innings of four matches and also picked up eight wickets an average of 22.37, while Izatullah captured 31 wickets and Dawlat claimed 27 wickets as the two Afghans finished third and fourth most successful bowlers, respectively.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) opener Swapnil Patil has been selected as Porterfield’s partner while Khurram Khan is the other batsman to find a place in the side. Patil with 401 runs was was the third leading run-getter of the tournament, while Khurram topped the batting chart with 674 runs that included three centuries and two half-centuries.
Scotland’s Majid Haq is the other spinner in the side following his 26 wickets at an average of 16.73, which Netherlands’ Tom Cooper has been named as the 12th man.
Besides Porterfield, White and Haq are the other two players who were also part of the ICC Intercontinental Cup 2009-10 Team of the Tournament.
ICC High Performance Manager Richard Done said: “With a number of exceptionally good performances in this tournament the selection process has been difficult, however, in the end, a well-balanced side that includes top performers over the past 30 months has been put together.
“The fact that consistent performers like John Mooney, Mohammad Nabi and Wesley Barresi missed the cut reflects the high standard of play at this level.”

The nominations were then short-listed by a three-person committee that also included David Jukes (match referee), Brian Murgatroyd (media representative) and Richard Done.
The selectors picked the players in the following categories: top order batsmen (three), middle-order batsmen (three); wicketkeeper (one); quick bowlers (three) and spin bowlers (two).
