Connacht Launches U19 Mixed Provincial Ranking

Breaffy Sports Arena Mayo hosted the first Connacht Junior ranking event of the season on Saturday 15th September 2013. The Connacht Branch used the event to launch a new initiative with a view to prolonging the life cycle of Junior Players. The initiative has received full support from both Clubs and Coaches throughout the Province and of course players who no longer meet the age criteria for Cadet Entry. The initiative encourages player retention but also provides a platform facilitating transition to senior level. Moving forward, it is envisaged that U19 Rankings will provide the Branch the opportunity to select an U21 team for the Senior Inter-provincials to be hosted by Connacht March 2014. This will be the first time in many years that Connacht will be represented at U21 level in the Senior Interprovincial Championships.

Mark Melynchuk (Manulla TTC) was crowned Connacht’s First U19 Champion defeating Martin-Edward Ditchburn (Mayo Academy) in the final 3, 4, 6. Third/fourth place play-off proved to be a tighter affair with Sligo’s Dylan Carson taking Mayo’s Orla Timlin in the fifth set on deuce.  Mathew McNeive (Mayo Academy) won the Consolation Event defeating Manulla’s Chloe Durkan 8, 7, 13 in the final.  The mixed format brought an exciting edge to the event and is likely to grow in popularity as the season progresses. Congratulations to all who participated making the event a hugh success!
