ROWING Anti-Doping Rule Violation

The Irish Sports Council and the Irish Amateur Rowing Union jointly announced today that the Irish Sport Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel has determined that an athlete in the sport of rowing has committed an anti-doping rule violation.

The Panel found that, contrary to Article 2.1 of the Irish Anti-Doping Rules, the presence of a specified prohibited substance or its metabolite, cannabis, was found in a sample of the athlete’s urine collected during in-competition testing in February 2008.

The athlete involved stood provisionally suspended until the hearing of the Panel. At the hearing, the Panel reprimanded the athlete and imposed a period of ineligibility corresponding to the duration of the athlete’s provisional suspension i.e. three weeks. The Panel also issued a severe warning to the athlete as to the serious consequences of a second violation. As the individual concerned is a minor, the Panel also directed that the Irish Amateur Rowing Union and the Irish Sports Council do not publish the name of the athlete.

The process was held under Article 8 (Disciplinary Process) of the Irish Anti-Doping Rules and this announcement is made pursuant to Article 15 (Public Disclosure) of the Rules.
