Delaney delighted with Para Top 10

Ireland's paratriathlon trailblazers acquitted themselves well at the ITU
Paratriathlon World Championships on Friday afternoon.

The four Irish athletes qualified to represent their country at the National
Paratriathlon Championships, held alongside triAthlone in July and formed
Ireland's first paratriathlon team to compete in a World Championships.

The top result came for Michael Delaney, a former World Championships
Para-cyclist, who made up time over the bike and run to finish a brilliant 9th
in the Tri 6b category for visually impaired athletes. With guide Matt Coughlan
the duo clocked a time of 1:17:11 on a greasy and technical course which
consisted of a 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run.

In the same category Belgium based Nicolas Dewalque finished 15th in a time
of 1:28:23.

Denton Howard in the upper arm impairment category of Tri 4 had a solid all
round performance to finish 26th in 1:24:03. Close behind was Mark Phillips in
35th spot and 1:44:00.

The home nation, Great Britain has been running a paratriathlon program for
the past number of years and they reaped the rewards winning no less than 15
medals. With paralympics now part of the Rio Olympics the development of
paratriathlon is high on Triathlon Ireland's agenda. A paratriathlon talent ID
day is planned for late November.
