White 35th in U23 World Champs

12 Sep 2013

Banbridge
man Russell White got off to a flying start at the U23 World Triathlon
Championships in London as he rounded the first 750m swim lap in 14th
place.

The early
pace was being set by Canadian swim specialist Matthew Sharpe who emerged from
the 1500m swim in a blistering 17:11. White was 21 seconds off the leader,
however a quick T1 saw him make the lead pack of 21.

For a stage
it looked as though they would pull well clear as the advantage grew to a
minute twenty at one stage. Through half way the chase pack began to get
organised and clawed back time on each lap. They had reduced the gap to 30
seconds by the time they entered the second’s transition, giving the fastest
runners a chance of making the top 10.

White was
well positioned and in the top 20 and had a fast transition, starting the run in
12th. Frenchman Pierre Le Corre powered though the 10km run to
eventually claim gold ahead of Fernando Alarza in 2nd and Declan
Wilson in 3rd.

White
clocked 34mins 49secs for the 10km run bringing him home in 35th
place. After a season blighted with a calf injury it’s a top result for the
Stirling University student.
