Lough Key

10 Sep 2013

The Lough Key sprint triathlon had a surge of entries prior to the race with
some 420 racing on Sunday.

Kevin Thornton put in a final effort before he heads off to the ITU Age
Group World Championships in London next weekend and can be pleased with his victory.

One of Westport’s most talented juniors, Aichlinn O'Reilly pushed him close
though as they exited the water with 5 seconds of each other. Aichlinn, on a
road bike lost time during the cycle section but both matched each other during
the run, covering the 5km in 16:36.

Eamon McAndrews put in a great run and a solid bike, however had too much
time to make up out of the swim and had to settle for 3rd.

In the women's race there was a very close finish with Jennifer O'Connell piping
Katie Fitzgerald’s by just 30 seconds. Jennifer’s strong swim and bike setting
her up for the win. Belpark's Derval Devaney was over a minute down out of the
water and well outside the top 3 however posted the fastest bike and run splits
to bring herself right through the field and onto the podium.
