Para Squad Success

10 Sep 2013

Sunday September 1st saw Ireland's finest Para badminton players come together for the first time at Ireland's National Training Centre at Marino Institute of Education. The launch of the squad is a huge step forward for para badminton in Ireland and will only continue to go from strength to strength.  All players in attendance are members of the Irish team travelling to the BWF Para World Championships, Dortmund, Germany in November. National training sessions are an important element in the development of international players ahead of major championships, they provide many benefits including team bonding, boosting team moral, as well as experiencing travelling and playing in a different environment.

National Coach Daniel Magee led the session with the assistance of Ben Caldwell, Karen Brady and Eugene McVeigh. Throughout the session players were challenged with a range of tactical, technical and physical routines as well getting the opportunity to spar with Badminton Ireland Academy players. It was a great opportunity for players and coaches alike to work together ahead of the upcoming world championships, and everyone benefited hugely.  A special word of thanks must go to Eugene McVeigh for his continuous efforts in driving Para badminton forward and his constant enthusiam and commitment to training players on a weekly basis.

" I very much enjoyed myself here today at badminton Ireland's Para Squad. There was many good coaches giving us good help which will benefit us" Niall McVeigh reigning World para Champion.

"It was a great launch to our para badminton squad, having the players who will represent Ireland at the World Para Badminton championships training in the National center in Marino. There was a good eneregy in the training session and we hope that we can use the example of World Champion Niall McVeigh to encourage players to come and follow in his footsteps. Badminton Ireland hope to build on the success of this opening squad to continue to develop para badminton going forward" National Coach Daniel Magee
