Ellen Keane Wins another Bronze Medal in Montreal

Eighteen year old Ellen Keane has picked up her second Bronze medal in the 100m Butterfly S9 Final on the penultimate day of competition at the Paralympic Swimming World Championships. Keane had already won Bronze in the 100m Breaststroke SB8 on Thursday.

The Dubliner had secured her place in the Butterfly Final with a heat swim of 1:13.18, just .03 of a second off her lifetime best of 1:13.15 which she swam at the Paralympic Games in London in 2012, the time ranking her third overall. Swimming in Lane 3 in the Final Keane swam a massive personal best taking over 1.5 seconds off her previous best and touched in 1:11.55 to secure the Bronze medal ahead of Russia's Irina Grazhdanova in 1:13.08.

Delighted with her second Bronze medal Keane commented "It feels amazing to end the competition like this, to do such a big personal best after years of Butterfly really hurting it felt so nice, this is unreal, I'm so happy"

15 year old Amy Marren of Great Britain was the Gold medallist securing her third World Championship Title this week in a time of 1:10.07 while Paralympic Games Silver medallist Spain's Sarai Gascon picked up Silver once again in 1:10.58.

Keane's second Bronze medal brings Ireland's medal total to seven now, with at least one medal won by an Irish swimmer on each day of the Championship so far.

James Scully was also in Finals action tonight, the 200m Freestyle S5 Bronze medallist swam the Final of the 100m Freestyle finishing 5th overall in a time of 1:24.08, his fastest time in the event this year.

"It's a good result in terms of ranking and better than my rank in London" commented Scully "but the times a bit slow, it's the fastest time I've swam this year and there are a few positives to take away from it but I'm disappointed with the time overall".

Brazil's Daniel Dias picked up his fifth Gold medal of the Championships in the 100m Freestyle in a time of 1:09.72 with the USA's Roy Perkins claiming Silver in 1:14.35.

Laurence McGivern will get his first taste of competition on what will be the Final day of swimming in Montreal, the 20 year old will be swimming the heats of the 100m Backstroke S9. Darragh McDonald and James Scully will both be back in the pool also with McDonald in the 100m Freestyle and Scully in the 50m Freestyle heats.
