Double Gold for Barry at the Celtic Tri Nations on Day Three

12 May 2013

The final day of racing took place in East Kilbride today and saw double wins for Barry Murphy in his sprint events.

The 2012 Olympian showed his class in the 50m Freestyle to win in a time of 23.44. This win was then repeated 10 minutes later in the 50m Breaststroke. Not having the usual comfort of a swim-down pool at the facility made the win even more impressive and undoubtedly more challenging.

The Dubliner will be pleased with his performances at the meet and take confidence from his three wins going into his summer preparations.

Other individual podium swims came from Curtis Coulter of Ards in the 50m Freestyle, Sean Leahy from Dolphin in the 200m Individual Medley, Bethany Carson from Lisburn in the 200m Individual Medley, and Andrew Meegan from Aer Lingus in the 400m Freestyle.

The race for the championship trophy went down to the wire and unfortunately Ireland had to settle for third, with Wales winning the overall Celtic Tri Nations title for 2013. However, the final night of competition was Ireland's best, filled with many podium finishes and personal records.

The team will now return to Ireland and their training bases and begin the next block of work for the major events in the summer.
