Ireland's David McCarthy achieves standard in Boston

David McCarthy (West Waterford AC) is the latest athlete to achieve the Athletics Ireland performance standard for the upcoming European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden scheduled for early March.

McCarthy was competing in the 3,000m event at the 2013 BU Valentine Invitational in Boston on Thursday 14th of February. He recorded a time of 7:51.24 to comfortable go inside the required standard of 8:00.00 for the European championships. The effort was all the more impressive when you consider that second place athlete Stephen Sollowin finished more than 20 seconds behind McCarthy in a time of 8:11.66.
