The World Breeding Championships for Young Horses at Lanaken in Belgium will be the focus of equestrian action this weekend, with Irish horses and riders competing in the five, six and seven year-old classes.

A total of 21 horses from Ireland, 15 of them Irish Sport Horses, will take part across the three categories, with 13 riders.

Lanaken, which is the premier event on the equestrian breeding calendar, sees qualifying competitions running from today (Thursday) with the World Championship Finals taking place on Sunday.

Three Day Eventing this weekend sees Capt. Geoff Curran and Aiden Keogh compete at Waregem in Belgium, while Mark Kyle, Niall Griffin, Austin O'Connor, Jennifer Hyland, Wendy Harris, Philippa Peters and Jonty Evans fly the Irish flag at Osberton in Britain.

Mark McAuley is Ireland's sole competitor at three-star show jumping in Manerbio, Italy, while Sonia Zugel is the only Irish representative in dressage at Devon in the USA.
