Institute of Sport delivers an innovative post-Games support event

The Institute of Sport is delighted to announce that the Irish Olympic Boxing Team have initiated the next phase of their post-Games support process through the Institute’s Athlete Performance Transition Programme.  On August 24th family members of the 2012 Olympic Boxing Team attended a half day seminar focusing on the provision of effective support during the post-Games period. The event builds on the success of a pre-Games family support event which took place on June 30th.

Gary Keegan, Director, Irish Institute of Sport commented ‘Families play a critical role in the provision of support to athletes and coaches. The post-Games period can be a real challenge for family members as they provide support to their loved ones after such a phenomenal experience at the Games. The recent post-Game family support event offers family members of the 2012 Olympic Boxing team with an opportunity to access best practice advice around the psychology of the post-Games period, media management and career planning. We are delighted to provide this important support’

Billy Walsh, Head Coach, Irish Olympic Boxing Team

Billy Walsh formally thanked family members for providing such great support to the boxing team pre, during and after the Games. Billy shared his experience of the post-Games period as an athlete and a coach and provided clear support steps to the families that are designed to assist the boxers as they transition during the post-Games period.

Gerry Hussey provided family members with key insights into the psychology attached to the post-Games period. Family members were given key tips and insights into how to manage some of the typical psychological responses during this time.

 

Daragh Sheridan, Head of Performance Skills, Irish Institute of Sport

Daragh Sheridan provided families in attendance in with some of the key workshop dates available to boxers as they manage their post-Games transition. In addition Daragh provided family members with some support information concerning the management of the media and sponsors.

The pre-Games family support event on June 30th played a key role in ensuring that the family support was informed and aligned with best practice. It is our aim to provide a similar support ethos as the boxers manage their post-Games transition.’
