The Institute of Sport is delighted to announce that the Irish Olympic Boxing Team have initiated their post-Games support process through the Institute’s Athlete Performance Transition Programme. The programme works by offering a series of combined supports designed to assist athletes as they adjust to key challenges during the post-Games period. These supports include:

  • Psychological Debriefing
  • Medical Assessment
  • Career & Education Advice
  • Media & Sponsorship Advice
  • Peer to Peer Support Networking
  • Athlete Mentorship

Gary Keegan, Director, Irish Institute of Sports commented ‘The Performance Transition Programme is one of the Institute’s most critical support offerings. It is designed to assist athletes as they manage typical challenges associated with the pre- and post- Games period. In particular the post-Games period is a significant adjustment window where radical changes can take place. Our aim is to ensure that our athletes are best placed to manage typical demands during this period.’

Billy Walsh, Head Coach, Irish Olympic Boxing Team stated ‘The post-Games period is a crucial part of our athlete support plan. I am uniquely aware of the challenges attached to adjusting to the post-Games period. My experience of competing and coaching at 4 Olympic Games has highlighted this period as a critical priority within our athlete support plan. The Institute of Sport have started the first phase of this process and we are delighted to access these services. I urge all athletes to reach out and use the supports that are available’

The Institute’s Performance Transition Programme operates through 3 critical principles: Recover, Refocus, Re–energize. Each principle contains a set of services designed to support athletes as they adjust to their games experience. For more information on the programme click here.

As part of the programme offering, the Institute have recruited 3 top programme ambassadors who have had an experience of managing the games experience:

"After Beijing I experienced a profound and unexpected emotional challenge around the post-Games 'come down'. At the time it was difficult to understand what was happening and I'd have really appreciated having the support that the Institute now offers to athletes in this period." Gearoid Towey, Olympian, 2008 Games

"I was fortunate to compete at 6 Paralympic Games. When I retired after the 2008 Games, it was a real challenge to adjust as I did not have a clear plan in place for the retirement transition. Support from the Institute was critical in assisting me to make a successful transition. My fears around retirement were put to rest through the great support that I received."  Patrice Dockery, 6 time Paralympian, Wheelchair Track

"Managing success after the Games was a real challenge for me and I learned the hard way how to find my path again. Many athletes struggle with their post-Games transition and I am working with the Institute to help make sure that the right advice, support and guidance are there for you. Get in touch and get involved, we're here to provide a helping hand."Kenneth Egan, Silver Medallist, 2008 Games
