Ireland miss out on series win following 5-2 reverse in Santander

15 Jun 2012

Ireland played Spain this afternoon closing off a three match test series in Santander missing out on clinching the series with a 5-2 loss against the world's number 5's.

Ireland started brightly taking the lead in the 5th minute when captain Gormley finished off from a Conor Harte drag rebound. Ireland held onto the lead until the 13th minute when Debanch levelled the sides with a break away goal. Spain capitalised on the momentum scoring two further open play goals before the half putting Ireland on the back foot at 3-1 going into the break.

Spain continued in goal scoring form after the break getting a further two opening up the lead to 5-1 before Conor Harte dragged home to close the gap to 5-2 in the 52nd minute. Despite an Irish dominance in the final ten they could not break through to close in on the three goal deficit. Ireland travel home tonight losing the series 2-1 as Spain continue to build towards the London 2012 Olympics.
