08 Feb 2012

The ITTA is pleased to announce the team to represent Ireland at the 2012 LEIBHERR World Team Table Tennis Championships in Dortmund, Germany from 25th March to 1st April.

The Men's team sees John Murphy joining with Paul McCreery, Ashley Robinson and Gavin Maguire while Amanda Mogey, Ashley Givan and Edel O'Reilly will compete in the Women's event.

Speaking at the team announcement John Murphy and Amanda Mogey said they were delighted with their selection and are eagerly looking forward to the competition. Murphy, who is no stranger to this tournament having attended eight times previously, recognises the challenge that lies ahead.

"The World Team Championships is the best tournament on the Calendar with over 100 nations taking part. In the men's we will play in Division 3 as we held our position in this Division in Moscow 2010. It will be tough and our primary goal has to be to consolidate our position in this Division. We have a young squad in both Men and Women which is great for the future but I think it is also a squad that is ready to get results at these Championships".

This is a view shared by Technical Director John O' Donoghue. " The World Championships is our premium event and a wonderful opportunity for the players to play at a top class event and compete against teams from all over the world. I am delighted that we are able to send such a strong, young team in both the Ladies and Men's event. I offer my congratulations on all those selected and look forward to seeing some good results from the championships".

Although the women are all experienced competitors on the international stage this will be their first time at the World Team Championships. Amanda is looking forward to the challenge.

"I am delighted to have been selected to compete for Ireland at the upcoming World Team Championships. This has been a long term ambition of mine and it is a fantastic feeling to be representing Ireland for the first time in this major competition. My experiences at other major competitions such as the World Individual Championships, Commonwealth Games and European Championships should stand me in good stead and as a team, we will hopefully be able to put in some impressive performances".
