SWIMMING Record breaking weekend for Nocher
Melanie Nocher broke Michelle Smith’s 14 year old 200m backstroke Irish record when winning the gold medal at the Speedo Western Canadian Swimming Championships. Melanie’s winning time of 2.08.52 broke the old record set in 1994 by over 2 seconds. Melanie also broke the 50m and 100m Irish backstroke records at the Meet.
Melanie was awarded a grant of €12,000 (International category) under the 2008 International Carding Scheme. She will also benefit substantially from the 2008 Performance Plan allocation of €350,000 to Swim Ireland. This allocation covers training camps, competition requirements, coaching, sports science and medical support and equipment requirements.
