Fiona Doyle celebrated Team Ireland's first swimming heat win in the 100 metre freestyle at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China.

Although the native Limerick swimmer did not capture a spot in the finals, Doyle did manage to secure 18th position in the event after finishing with a time of 56.75.

Doyle currently studies in Canada and expressed her delight in winning an event heat that is not her speciality.

"This is a fantastic achievement as the freestyle would not be my main event," said Doyle who enjoys competing in the breaststroke events.

"I am really happy with my time and am glad to get the nervousness out of the way before my big event later this week."

Also swimming were team mates Karl Burdis who accomplished a 56.70 in the 100 metre backstroke, Bethany Carson who swam for a time of 2:23.20 in the 200 metre individual medleys and Niamh O'Sullivan who ranked 24th in the 400 metre freestyle with a time of 4:24.41.

Meanwhile, DIT archer John Smith shot 72 arrows to earn 29th position ahead of the Men's Individual Compound Head-to-Head Archery event that kicks off on Tuesday afternoon.

John's placement means that he will meet a 36th ranked archer from Singapore who finished 20 points behind Smith. The two competitors will battle for the highest score out of 15 arrows to advance to the next stage.

Live Archery coverage will begin on www.livefisu.tv from 3 pm Shenzhen time (8 pm Irish time) and Swimming events will be ran throughout the day.

Other events commencing on Tuesday include Weightlifting with Galway native Kevin D'Arcy competing in the 85kg class in the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk and Athletics kicks off at 9:35 am with DCU's Brian Gregan in the 400 metre heats.
