22 Jul 2011

The 2011 Irish Open Youth/Senior Long Course Championships got under way today at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin. The competition represents the culmination of the competitive season for Irish swimming clubs and this year the event has attracted a large number of overseas teams, attracted by the standard of competition and world class facilities available in Ireland for swimming.

In total, 29 visiting teams are competing in Dublin this weekend, including delegations from the UK, France, Egypt and Croatia.

There are 46 Irish clubs entered. Double Olympian Andrew Bree, swimming for Ards SC, was amongst those competing today and took Gold in the Men's 50m Breaststroke as the first placed Irish Swimmer (29.22).

The event continues until Sunday, with heats beginning at 9:30am each day and final's at 4:30pm each evening.

Meanwhile, a number of Irish swimmers are competing in Sheffield this week. After a strong performance in the morning heats at British Age Groups the Irish Team returned to the pool in the afternoon for the Finals session for some exciting swims.

The evening started with Lydia Kehoe producing another PB from her morning swim to finish in 4th place in the Girls 200IM. The 11yr old boys of Ciaran Burke and Conor Ferguson also delivered strong PB's in Finals to finish in 5th and 8th place respectively. The swim of the night saw 11yr old Danielle Hill from Larne SC claim Gold in the 200BC with a superb new PB of 2:28.13.
