Irish Team Announced for European Juniors

12 Jul 2011

A strong team of 15 Irish Junior athletes, 6 girls and 9 boys, has been announced for the European Juniors in Tallinn, Estonia from July 21st to 24th. Irish Junior athletes have qualified in a wide range of events for these pivotal Championships, from Hammer to Sprints and Hurdles, to Middle Distance and Walks, and it is encouraging to see the athletes qualifying selected from all over the country.

Ireland has a good record of success in the European Juniors, with three gold medals (from Nick O'Brien in the 3,000m in 1985, Mark Carroll in the 5,000m in 1991, and by Colin Costello in the 1,500m in 2005). In addition, Ireland has won three silver medals at European Junior level, including one by John Treacy in 1975, and four bronze medals, for a total of 10 so far. So there are plenty of grounds for optimism for more good performances from these Championships.
