Identification of tasks to be fulfilled and skills required

24 Jun 2011

Before recruiting volunteers, the club should review all jobs carried out within the club, identifying the tasks involved in each job and the skills needed to deliver on these tasks. It is particularly important to identify the timescale and the time commitment likely to be involved. Time is of critical importance to volunteers, not alone in terms of the amount of volunteering-time but also in terms of how it is valued by the club. Some key steps that should be taken in this stage are:

  • Conduct a skills audit of people who would like to volunteer from your existing membership
  • Set down clear roles and expectations. There are some volunteer role descriptions in the downloads and links section.
  • Be clear about the time commitment required (how many hours per week/month and over what period of time).
  • Make sure that enquiries from potential volunteers are responded to promptly
