Golf: Irish Men Claim European Title

The Irish Amateur Golf Team won the European Team Championship for the 4th time defeating France in the Final on Saturday at Western Gailes Golf Club Scotland.

The Irish Team consisting of Rory McElroy, Shane Lowry, Jonathan Caldwell, Richard Kilpatrick and Simon Ward had a magnificent week. Qualifying in the top eight after the opening stroke play rounds Ireland had victories over Sweden in the Quarter Final and England in the Semi-Final.

In the Final the morning foursomes were shared with one point each. In the afternoon singles, France had the first success with Barabazon Trophy winner Romain Bechu defeating Elroy. Ireland rallied with victories for Shane Lowry and Richard Kilpatrick and a half for Simon Ward.

The destination of the trophy hinged on the last game between Jonathan Caldwell nand Alexandre Kaleka.  Caldwell rose to the challenge coming from behind to win the 10th,  13th, 14th and 15th.  Determined to win, having suffered defeat to Kaleka in the morning foursomes Caldwell holed a critical putt at the 16th to seal his win and title for his team.
After the victory Team Captain Michael Burns said “I am delighted with our win here today, all of the players have done their part and contributed to this title, and Kilpatrick’s course record breaking form this week certainly proved to be a good omen. It has been a wonderful tournament and it a great reward for all the hard work and preparation to be taking the trophy back to Ireland”.
