BOXING Serbia Multi-Nations

27 Sep 2010

Chris Blaney claimed gold and the boxer of the tournament award at the Vojvodina Golden Gloves Youth Multi-Nations in Novi Sad, Serbia yesterday.

And Chris Phelan also finished on top of the podium as Ireland collected two gold and two silver medals from Sunday's finals.

Phelan, from the Ryston BC, had his hand raised in victory at the 11-nation tournament after Hungarian flyweight Gyorgy Mizsei was retired in round two, and Navan middleweight Blaney emerged victorious after Ferenc Orbanc, also of Hungary, was also retired in round two.

But while Blaney and Phelan were celebrating, Stephen Broadhurst and Michael McDonagh had to settle for silver after being edged out in the lightweight and welterweight deciders.

McDonagh lost a tactical duel with Maxim Shmyglev of Russia 1-0 and Broadhurst was left frustrated after dominating his final against home favourite Denis Memerovic of Serbia only to lost out 3-2 on the judges verdict following a 1-1 draw.

Irish team manager Paul McMahon said that they were delighted with the medal haul from Serbia and praised the efforts of the Irish quartet in Sunday's finals and the Irish squad at the prestigious Youth tournament in Novi Sad.
